The Events Programme commenced with a 4 mile ‘Churches of the Parish’ Sponsored Walk organised by the Walking Club on 4th June, led by Val Warlow.

Sat. 4th June ‘Churches of the Parish’ Sponsored Walk

Starting from All Saints’ Church, we walked down the hill to St. Nicholas, across to Barry Island and along to the site of the original St Baruc’s Church, now flats. On to St Baruc’s in Phyllis Street and skirting the south side of Barry Docks, we climbed up on to the headland of Nells Pont and the remains of the medieval chapel dedicated to St Baruc. This completed our ‘pilgrimage’ of Christian worship from the Celtic Saints to All Saints’.  We continued our walk around Jacksons Bay, Whitmore Bay for a picnic, before returning via Romilly Park.

Thanks to all Club members and Church members who walked and for the support of all who sponsored us - it’s not too late for further sponsors!

September saw a very successful Harvest Supper organised by Mothers' Union on behalf of the Parish supported by the Spectrum Singers raise a total of £420..!!

All Saints' Harvest Supper

October and November were busy in terms of fundraising events. We started off with Music & Monologues performed by the Gill Davies players to an audience of over 200 people. If you weren't there you missed a fantastic evening! This event raised a magificent £1,988.00.

The Christmas Craft Fair held on the 12th November, organised by Josie Thomson. A culmination of months of hard work by many in creating and donating various items of crafts, cakes, raffle prizes etc.

As soon as the doors opened it did not stop! The homemade welsh cake ladies were kept really busy and sold out by 11.15am...!!  Rob Grover took first prize in the raffle of the knitted Nativity scene and Ruth LeBreton Gealy won Guess the Weight of the Organ Cake donated by the Little Blue Deli.

A magnificent £1,363.45 was raised and has now brought the total of the appeal fund to approx £17,300..!!!

The 24th November saw the final Organ Appeal Autumn Lunch. In addition to our two raffle prize draws, Joy Hume gave her usual entertaining reading and Suzanne Grover sold the range of Organ Appeal murchandise.

The four weeks of Autumn Lunches raised a pleasing profit of £1025.75! The Lunches Team and Harry sincerely thank everyone who supported their venture so generously.

The Family Christmas Concert held in All Saints' Church on the 10th December saw a total of 120 people attending the event. The music programme which was constructed around a family theme for adults and children included many favourites such as Tom Thumb, ET, Sleeping Beauty, The Pirates of the Caribbean and Beauty and the Beast.

Mr Phil Roberts conductor of the Cardiff Concert Orchestra stated, " We are delighted to support the All Saints' Organ Appeal. The acoustics really lend themselves to an orchestra and we have been made to feel so welcome in setting up and getting everything as best it can be." It is hoped that during 2012, Cardiff Concert Orchestra will support us once again. The amount raised from the event is approximately £460.00.

About Us

All Saints is an Anglican parish within the Diocese of Llandaff in the Church in Wales.  Our parish consists of 2 places of worship, All Saints’ Church, Barry and St. Baruc’s Church, Barry Island. All Saints’ Church was completed in 1915, being built to meet the needs of the dramatic increase in population which followed the construction of the Barry Docks. It is a large Church, with a current electoral roll of some 367 members and a healthy congregation. There are 3 regular Sunday services and 2 weekday services plus additional special services as appropriate.  The Church has a flourishing Sunday School and Young Musicians Group. It is closely linked with All Saints’ Church in Wales Primary School, established in 1986.

Church organisations include Mothers Union, Ladies Guild, Flower Guild, Choir, Walking Club, Bible Study Group and Social Committee. The Church and Church Hall provide a focus for many successful activities and events.

In addition to its own activities, the Church is also a regular and popular venue for concerts arranged by Barry Choral Society, Barry Male Voice Choir and Barry Ladies Choir. It is also well used for charity concerts such as those held by the RNLI and for local schools’ concerts, civic and other events. These events serve to open the Church to the wider community of the town.

Our Project

The pipe organ at All Saints was first dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Llandaff when the Church opened in 1915. Built by Evans & Barr of Belfast, it is a fine instrument of historical merit and one of the treasures of our Church. The original 2 manual organ, (which contained 28 stops and 1,095 speaking pipes), was driven by a rotary blower and gas engine. Installed in a chamber above the choir vestry, it has a very handsome case of figured oak, with silvered pipework. In 1987, the organ was extended and modified, using additional pipework obtained from Salem Welsh Baptist Chapel in Porth, Rhondda. A new console was installed and the organ now has 3 full manuals and is operated by electricity. It was re-dedicated in 1989. Although regularly cared for over the years, our organ is now in need of a complete overhaul, with major refurbishment required. For some time, it has failed to provide predictable and reliable performance and has produced audible misbehaviour on a number of occasions.

The organ plays an essential part in our regular acts of worship. A range of sung Communion settings are used for the Eucharist. It is the ideal instrument for leading congregational singing and the Church has a strong choral tradition.  The Choir is continually expanding its repertoire and an anthem is sung at each main service. All Saints is a large Parish and many come regularly to mark the significant rites of passage - births, marriages and deaths and, on these occasions, the organ contributes to prayer, thanksgiving, sharing, celebration and mourning. From the wider community, music lovers attend regular concerts and special services and the Church is used by local schools, choirs and other community organisations as previously detailed.

This fine organ has been part of the tradition of worship at All Saints since its opening in 1915.

Our responsibility to both present and future generations must be to ensure its restoration and continued use. Once restored, our organ also has great potential as a recital or teaching instrument and we will seek to extend its use for the enjoyment and benefit of our wider community.

What We Need

We need to raise £68,000 to restore our pipe organ and preserve our musical tradition.

This is a specialist task which requires high standards of experienced workmanship and a conservation report has therefore been obtained. We need to restore the organ as soon as possible to avoid continuing costly repairs. Ideally, all of the proposed work would be carried out at one time.

By nature of their age, pipe organs require major refurbishment every 25-30 years because leathers perish, pipework deteriorates and moving parts wear out. Replacement of the leather bellows will cost approximately £15,000. Repairs to pipework will cost £7,500. Choir and trumpet magnets need replacing at a cost of £3,530 and a further £3,990 is needed to overhaul drawstop machines.

Unusually inclement weather, with resulting damage to the Church roof has also caused severe water damage to the soundboards and repair costs are estimated at £18,950. Repositioning of the blower and re-design of the wind system is also strongly recommended, at a cost of £7,500.

(A full breakdown of estimated costs is attached).

Our Plan of Action

The Parochial Church Council has set up a Fundraising Sub Committee to manage this project.

The group comprises our Rector, Church Wardens and Treasurer and a number of PCC members, who together represent a strong and varied range of professional/ management experience.

An Action Plan has been established to ensure effective and efficient management and delivery of the project. In order to achieve this, clear targets, timescales and responsibilities have been identified.

In addition to making applications for grant funding from a variety of sources, an appeal for donations and pipe sponsorship, all of our Church organisations, other groups associated with the Church and the wider community in our Parish, will be encouraged to be involved in a planned programme of fundraising activities, thus promoting collective commitment and ownership of the project.

The PCC has also set aside a designated amount towards the project from its annual budget (the maximum that it can afford). An Insurance Claim, in respect of water damage to the soundboards has also been submitted, although the outcome of this is uncertain and unlikely to meet full costs.
